How we use who we are
Someone said to me the other day, "It’s all very well to bang on about personal branding and telling people to do things in their own way but the truth is we change who we are in different circumstances”. She was suggesting that to identify your personal brand can be a limiting thing. I strongly disagree!
When we know and acknowledge who we are, we feel grounded and are at our most resourceful. Everything is aligned and when we are are in this state of mind, we can adapt our behaviour most easily to achieve a certain outcome.
The interaction of the clear outcome with who we are, then informs us about what we need to do to get the result. Whilst it may go against the grain for the perfectionist chemist to modify her behaviour with a child who came second in their maths exam, in these circumstances it’s quite possible to adapt and see the value of encouraging rather than finding fault. The same is true of a boss or any other human being who may manifest on your horizon as an obstacle to your preferred result.
The motivator for being flexible in the way you use your brand is the “why” and if the “why” is important enough and you believe in who you are, you will find ways to get the result you want.
